Mountain Gorilla - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Mountain Gorilla – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

All the below was arranged by Escape tours & Safari, Entebbe Uganda

I took the 7.30 am flight from Entebbe international airport in a Aerolink Cessna Caravan Astol (A Short Take Off & Landing craft) 11 seater to Kihihi Savana airstrip, approximately 47 kilometres from Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park. The flight took 1hr 5mins to Kisoro air strip to collect a passenger then another 15 minutes to Kihihi. I was met by Ivan, a smart smiling guy, who welcomed me like a long lost friend; his surname was Mashemerer which means happy. Happy Ivan took my bag and put it in his car and asked me where I would like to sit, front or back, I would like to drive I replied and he tossed me the keys and got in the passenger front seat. The Toyota was an automatic and in good condition and as I started her up and pulled away I asked, how long and how far? about 2 hours and 47 kilometres.

There were no main roads from this bush airstrip, just local roads formed from pressed earth with a top coat of stones compressed by a heavy roller known as Murram roads. For two hours I drove along these roads trying my best to avoid the ruts, pot holes and rocks, whilst respecting Ivan’s car which was a family salon and not a 4 x 4.

White Water Rafting the Nile

As a mountaineer, kayaker and explorer, I have kayaked and rafted a few rivers around the world. For me the chance to raft the Nile, the longest river on earth was worth the long wait. I would like to thank Adrift Uganda, for the accommodation, river guide and the friendly faces of all the staff and for making this possible.

My journey.

After a 45 minute drive along a main road and a secondary road we turned off right down a dirt track for another 4k leading down to the put in at Kirigu, just above the river.

This unexpected purpose built put in site boasted sit down toilets, a covered eating area with benches, a small kitchen and concrete steps down to the river. Staff from a local river side lodge the “Wild Waters Lodge” were on site to serve a cooked breakfast of battered hardboiled egg and beef sausages, washed down with coffee, tea and cold drinks. We were being spoilt.

A Slovenian Success 14th -21st August 2012

Mountain biking, trekking, climbing and kayaking with some big rock jumps filled a week of adventure in this beautiful little country. Starting and ending each day with a swim in the lake before breakfast and dinner.

From our base, Hostel Pod Voglom perfectly positioned on the shore of Lake Bohinj and with the hire of equipment from Pac Sports, all ten in the group enjoyed an action and fun packed week in Slovenia.

A good flight landed twenty minutes early in a hot and sunny Ljubljana giving us time to enjoy a quick beer whilst we waited for our transfer vehicle.

Once on board our driver Jan drove us to our Hostel accommodation in Ribcev Lac, via the town of Bled one of the most popular tourist destinations of the old state of Yugoslavia, famed for its magnificent castle perched high above Bleds famous lake.

Morocco, Written by Steve Andrews

It’s 3:45am on January 12th 2012 and the alarm is beeping in my ear. Then I remember, we’re off to Morocco to climb Toubkal (4167m), highest mountain in the High Atlas and North Africa.
After a quiet drive to Gatwick, a rather pricey breakfast and a long stroll to our departure terminal, were on our way. There were nine of us in total in our group. All friends, or friends of friends and a couple of Father and Son pairings. Continue reading

Out of Lukla

Tagged as the most dangerous airport in the world, we found ourselves stranded for six days, 2840 metres high or 9318 ft in Lukla in the Solo Kumbu area of Nepal having just completed a ten day trek to view Mt Everest and the Tengboche Monastery.

Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region, a small town/village serviced by an air strip high in the Solo Kumbu. Each year thousands of tourist pass through here on their way to trek to Everest Base Camp for charity or for personal goals, trek to the start of a climb as this area is home to some of the most targeted mountains in the world or for those just wishing for a few days trekking in this high mountainous environment away from any vehicles and the noisy hustle and bustle of Kathmandu.

Natour Conference 2011 Slovenia

Peddle and Paddle work shop 30th Sept 2011-10-02
At 9.30 am on a very sunny morning, with bikes adjusted, protective helmets on, we set off from the hotel Bolfenk, perched 1050 metres high above Maribor, Slovenia’s second city reached by the Pohorje cable car system for a Peddle and Paddle introduction.

With an uphill start, which was a shock to the system and after 20 mins of peddling and pushing we reached our high point an old fire watch tower overlooking the primeval forests covering the Pohorje mountain slopes. Continue reading

A 1990 Expedition To Chulu West, Nepal – Recalled by Stewart Wright

CHULU WEST in the Annapurna region of the Nepal Himalaya is a trekking peak of 6419m (21,059ft).
A worthwhile objective in itself, but what better way to acclimatise than taking in the famous Annapurna circuit as a warm up!

That is the reason a group of nine friends headed by Steve lodge got to together and headed off on the oddly named Hen 90 (Himalayan Expedition Nepal 1990).

The team assembled in Kathmandu and checked in to the famous Kathmandu Guest house, the starting point of many Himalayan adventures and met some of the guides and Sherpa’s who would help us on our way. Continue reading

Sindi Nonkululeko Ngcamphalala, born 6 September 1985

During my fact finding trip to Swaziland in May this year (2011) I was part of a group taken to a very smart guest house, which in fact was a superb privately owned villa, very close to Manzini airport accessed by about two miles of dirt track road and then concrete road. We were shown the letting rooms, dining room and common areas which were all first class and decorated and furnished to an extremely high standard. After the tour we were given lunch and before moving on and I was introduced to a young lady called Sindi the step daughter of the lady who owned the villa, who runs the guest house working all departments and very long hours. She had prepared and served our lunch. Thanking her before I left, and knowing I had an early flight from Manzini in eight days time, I promised to return to stay the night before departure as it was close to the airport.
